There's not a soul that doesn't want Michael J. Fox to get better but what he's doing makes me sick. It reminds me of the beggars in the third world who shove their deformities under your nose and assault you for your donation.
He deliberately did not take his meds for 2 weeks in order to amplify his symptoms for an ad bashing Republicans in Missouri. Now no matter how you feel about the GOP, it's pretty sick and self-aggrandizing to exploit your illness and demand that everyone in the GOP doesn't want a cure for Parkinson's, cancer, or Alzheimer's and that embryonic stem cell research is the only cure.
Bring out the organ brokers. And God they do exist everywhere. Read City of Joy and I will tell you body brokers are in our backyards as well.
No one on this earth is guaranteed a perfect life without illness. Your organs fail and things go wrong. It's sick to see people circling embryos and other bodies like vultures waiting to pick their organs apart. It's like the people who fall upon a dying-but-not-yet-dead person in the third world in order to pick the gold out of their teeth, only sicker.
In addition to hurling hurricanes at impoverished chocolate cities while deftly maneuvering them past every oil well and Cracker Barrel in sight, the GOP now has the unmitigated power to strike people with any disease of their choosing and then singularly withhold the cure while clutching their evil dollars in their evil little fists. They pointed their finger and struck poor Mr. Fox with their poison like lightning from the almighty Zeus, yet they themselves are strangely fallible, for it seems they in their greedy folly struck my very GOP grandfather with their vile affliction named Parkinson's, my dear old grandpa who voted for the GOP faithfully, yet still suffered horribly for 30 odd years, while they allowed my other equally dear grandpa, a devoted Democrat, to live in fairly robust health until the ripe old age of 95.
I have heard cancer survivors say they would never mine an innocent person's body to save themselves. And it should be a goddam NON-ISSUE because it is the LEAST promising of all stem cell technology. One politican had people believing Christopher Reeve would have walked had John Kerry been elected.
The truth is, since this is so unpromising, there is no money going into it from private donors, so they are groveling for our tax money.
Let's put our taxes (and hey, we can raise them if we have to in order to do it) into umbilical cord research and other stem cell research. Bone marrow, for example.
I'm NOT having a pity party for freaking Michael J. Fox. Stop your fracking whining. You're pathetic.
Good to know a bunch of other people (including other celebrities- Jim Caviezal, Patricia Heaton, and a few others) did an ad condemning that ad and descrediting the "promise" of a cure. Man how it brings to mind the spiels of third world mendicants.
If there were any hope in this kind of research, I'd still be against it, but there IS no hope in it, it's a fracking NON-ISSUE...why can't they concentrate on the cures being developed, including Fox's medicine, which he didn't TAKE in order to play on our sympathy?
Idiots!

Who said he was off his meds? Rush Limbaugh (a conservative drug addict who I really don't respect)?

NEW YORK - In a response to charges by conservative talk-show host Rush Limbaugh,
Michael J. Fox defended his appearance in recent political campaign ads, saying he was neither acting nor off his medication for Parkinson's disease.

We live in a society that has cured numorous diseases and in modern life continues to pursue more. We don't have to live with smallpox anymore, nor polio, nor scarlet fever, mumps, measles, TB and the list goes on. Stem cells are controversial and there are many avenues that use stem cells that aren't embryonic. But thats not the point.
He chose to speak up for what he believes and for that I respect him. I think he grandstanded a whole lot less than most politicians. Parkinsons is an ugly disease and he is campaigning for a path to investigate a cure.
As for the GOP, the current leaders in the party have put themselves out there as holier than thou and goodness how the mighty are falling. We have a gubenatorial race out here that is ugly. The GOP candidate obtained illegal information (or is that information illegally) and is defending his actions as rightious while earlier in his career he had voted to pass legislation to enforce stricter punishments for the exact same action he just did. Hypocrit. Does that mean the Dems are perfect? no. But the current zealous GOP (often quoted as God's Own Party)members are dangerous and radical.
So I support Embryonic stem cell research? I can't say that I am wholey knowledgeable to say yay or nay. I know that what I have seen on the media is most likely tainted to one side or the other. I can't say that I trust everything that is being thrust at me.
Do I support searching for cures to debilitating illness, yes. Do I support someone who suffers from a life ending disease to campaign for a cure, you bet. Do I trust Good ole' Rushy to be a good source, HA, not on your life. I haven't seen proof that Mr. Fox missed his meds, I have heard speculations but not proof.
Politics and Religion, two of the most dangerous subjects in the world and honestly two things that shouldn't be mixed but sadly are getting hard to distinguish in America.
I think stem cell research is awesome, too. I just don't support growing humans just to hijack their body parts. It's reprehensible!
If my kids (or my brother's kids or your kids or anyone's kids) needed my stem cells or liver or kidneys or anything, even my lungs or heart, assuming I was a match I'd be in the hospital foyer in a second offering (or even offing) myself!!!
I'm not blindly in support of either the GOP or Dems. I vote mainly for GOP but every time I vote for a few Dems because I vote by issue, not by candidate.
The politics are way dirty out here, too. Out here there's a very hotly contested gubernatorial race between Republican Ken Blackwell (his wife Rosa was my first boss in Cincy and they are the reason, therefore, we live here) and Ted Strickland. Ted has been accused of going to Italy with his supposedly gay employee who was convicted of exposing himself to kids. And blah blah blah. I'm not going to vote AGAINST Strickland because I don't even know how valid that is (and from what I hear, not so valid) but I support the Blackwells because I personally know they are good and honest people.
There is a Dem running in Kentucky who is also a very good man, Ken Lucas, and if I lived there I'd probably vote for him.
I watched my grandpa suffer a very debilitating and ugly disease, Parkinson's. It basically turns part of your brain to liquid. Embryonic stem cells have done nothing but grow tumors when transplanted, but other stem cells have been much more promising.
I watched my GOP Grandpa suffer with this for 30 years and for anyone to imply the GOP wants people with Parkinson's not to be well, well, that's STUPID. I've seen Parkinson's, and Fox is showcasing too much. So did Reeve, in my opinion. There are also a lot of disabilities of people who have illnesses (like fibromyalgia) which are extremely disabling, and for which there's no celebrity to showcase. No celebrity = no research money.
Thanks for posting, Toy. Your thoughts are always important to me! And I loved looking at your blue mashed potatoes. You said you and Tom haven't created any traditions- well, that IS a tradition! Your kids will remember those!
Tom can remember how bad it was for our grandpa. It was pretty terrible. We don't have memories of our grandpa in his healthy days, when he was able to play violin, move, eat well, have a robust life. We only have memories of him struggling to speak, struggling to move, to walk, because Parkinson's hit him around the time we were born.
Ted Strickland? From colorado, Ted Strickland?? We had a candidate years ago with the same name, I wonder if it is the same guy. He lost bigtime out here.
Just a small point. My father was a diehard Republican all his life, but if he were still alive he would have abandoned the party completely after they sold themselves out to the fundamentalist Christians. There was nothing that could get his dander up more than religious people trying to butt into public life and forcing everyone to do things their way. This is a country of freedom, and that includes freedom for those who don't want ANY religion shoved in their faces. He would have not been able to tolerate Bushy Poo. He was a fiscal Republican, and believed in free thought for everyone. Mom
A lot of Dems are fundamentalist Christians, too, or, they say they are (Jimmy Carter...for one).
It appears to me that some (but not all) of the Dems have equally sold out to extreme social engineers.
I realize that about Grandpa. He was old school Republican and Grandpa T. was old school Democrat.
I vote by issue, not PARTY...reading back I realize I used the wrong word.
I'm so ready for a third party. I can't stand all of the negative politics. I will vote for not one canidate who uses negative ads. Thus, I will vote for virtually NO democrat or republican.
I'm also disappointed with modern menical research. There have been strides in cancer survival, preventative medicine and such but a disease has not been CURED for decades, almost centuries now. I hate to be negative about it but our modern medicine is not as modern as it needs to be. I don't think a disease will be cured until science makes a true breakthrough, unforseen to us now. We are always told we are so close but I think the more we know the further away we realize we are from curing anything.
Dave
Well Dave as long as you don't vote for that nut job who's even kookier than Bill Boshears- he's about all we have for the third party right now (unless you pencil Mickey Mouse or Bugs Bunny). According to that guy the Holocaust didn't happen and we are all at the behest of a the Zionist empire, which, by the way, engineered 9/11 and just made it look like Al Qaeda did it. LOOOOOOOPY!
It won't be too hard to find a candidate who will say:
P.S. People have not walked on the moon.
Aids was designed by the US government.
I secretly rule the universe.
